GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN...
Reviewed by Quentin Lee

"Baise Moi," "Rape Me" in English, is an edgy and fun-filled thrill ride of a radically independent vision about two girls (or young women) who embark on a wild odyssey of sex and murder. While the subject matter of rape and violence and their explicit treatment are guaranteed controversy, "Baise Moi" is notheless a pleasure to watch. Itıs fun, itıs subversive, itıs explicit, and yet it still has a heart.

Based on the novel by one of the filmmakers (Virginie Despentes), the story of "Baise Moi" is simple. After Manu (Rafaella Anderson) and her friend are raped by four thugs, she shoots her brother (or perhaps boyfriend?) who insensitively confronts her about her rape. Manu then meets Nadine (Karen Bach), a prostitute who needs to go to Paris after her friend (or ex-lover?) was shot. The two girls embark on a rage-filled killing spree. They have sex when they please, and they kill when they need (sometimes for fun too).

Nadine (Left) & Manu (Right) in "Baise Moi"
Compared to its "classier" and softer Hollywood predecessor "Thelma and Louise," "Baise Moi" is wilder, more exciting, more real and, absolutely independent. In fact, "Baise Moi" is the ultimate independent film, fulfilling the promise both stylistically and intellectually of a truly cool DV feature. "Baise Moi" reminds us what independent cinema can be‹excessive, violent, even pornographic (you do see insertion of body parts). But the most important thing is that the film never stops having fun.

Despite all the violence and the rape scene, the heart of the film is about two girls trying to have fun, whether it is sex or killing. Iım grateful that the filmmakers have restrained from injecting any sort of dramatic moralization in making the film and that they quite honestly portray the sex, the rape, the violence and all in a matter-of-fact fashion. One can choose to be digusted at the film and what the girls do; yet one can also choose to go along with the freewheeling fun ride along with them. As an audience, I chose the latter. And the trip is worth it, because itıs only in the cinema where we can safely and freely explore the darker side of life.

"Baise Moi" is a truly unconstipatable cinematic experience. "Baise Moi" is what cinema can be. If you really like independent films, you should not miss "Baise Moi." Prepare to get raped!
